Mexico: Consumer confidence ends 2015 on a high note

In December, the unadjusted index of consumer confidence elaborated by INEGI rose to 93.0 from November’s 92.5. The reading overshot the 92.8 that the markets had expected and marked a fourth consecutive increase. Moreover, the indicator reached the highest point in six months.

December’s improvement reflected that consumers were more optimistic regarding their current economic situation. Households were also more optimistic about the country’s current economic situation. Regarding their own economic prospects, consumers were less optimistic in December compared to the previous month, while they assessed the country’s economic prospects more positively. Moreover, with low unemployment and low inflation, consumers remain optimistic regarding the purchase of big-ticket items.

Panelists participating in the LatinFocus Consensus Forecast expect private consumption to grow 3.1% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2017, panelists see private consumption increasing 3.3%.
