Argentina: Consumer sentiment drops in December

After jumping to an eight-year high in November, the Universidad Torcuato di Tella (UTDT) consumer confidence index eased in December. The index dropped from 60.4 in November to 54.9, which marked a three-month low. Despite the drop, the index rests comfortably above the 50-point-threshold separating optimistic from pessimistic sentiment.

December’s deterioration mainly reflected consumers’ less optimistic assessment of the country’s economic outlook, which fell to its lowest level in three months. Moreover, consumers were less positive regarding their personal financial situations and the sub-index decreased from plus 7.8 in November to minus 6.0 in December. In addition, consumers were less willing to make major purchases compared to the previous month’s report.

Panelists surveyed by LatinFocus Consensus Forecast see private consumption expanding 0.8% in 2016, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists expect consumption to increase 0.4%.
