Mexico: Peso weakens on deepening Euro area crisis

By 15 June, the Mexican peso (MXN) traded at 13.89 per USD, which was down 0.5% compared to the value reached on the same day of the previous month. The reading follows on a 4.9% decline in May and, as a result, the Mexican peso has lost an accumulated 16.5% versus the USD over the last 12 months. Similar developments have taken place in most emerging market economies, as the deepening of the Euro area debt crisis has translated into heightened volatility in global financial markets and significant capital outflows from developing countries. That said, the Central Bank remains confident that the currency will recover in the medium-term, buttressed by the "solid fundamentals of the Mexican economy
