Exports in Zambia
Zambia - ExportsWhile the economy remains resilient, various challenges are becoming apparent. On the upside, the latest PMI reading shows that private sector activity strengthened for the third consecutive month in May, powered by a record surge in new business. The external sector likely lost ground in Q2, however, as imports came in higher than exports in April. Export earnings dropped in April despite rising prices for copper, as overseas sales of the commodity lost ground. Growth has also been restrained by unfavorable credit conditions owing to elevated lending rates hampering access to credit; the supply of credit contracted in Q1 following a robust expansion in Q4 2017.
