Current Account in Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan - Current AccountThe economy appears to have closed 2018 in good shape, with recent data suggesting that sturdy industrial production and buoyant exports supported growth in Q4. The external sector likely benefited from a jump in natural gas prices in the last quarter, buttressed by increased demand from China as the country moves away from coal owing to tougher pollution laws. On 30 January, officials announced plans to privatize the state-owned transport system. This is reflective of broader moves towards a more market-driven economy, which should help alleviate the country’s fiscal woes and promote diversification away from the current dependence on hydrocarbons.
