External Debt in Tajikistan

Tajikistan - External Debt

Available data suggests the economy gained traction in Q1. Despite challenging external conditions, exports contracted at a notably softer pace in the quarter, owing to a surge in energy exports in March. Moreover, activity in the agricultural and industrial sectors grew more strongly, on average, from the previous quarter, while construction output rebounded. Not all areas were upbeat, however, with capital investment decelerating sharply. In other news, the government finally increased the costs of telecommunication services, a move that was long dreaded and forms part of broader price rises for services, with business license fees and car insurance also being hiked at the start of the year. Aimed at raising more revenues to strengthen the fiscal account, the unpopular measures could end up jeopardizing the government’s political mandate.
