Unemployment in Slovakia

Slovakia - Unemployment

Growth seems to have picked up in Q1, following a deceleration in the final quarter of 2018. Industrial output gained steam at the outset of the year, powered by strong production in the all-important automotive sector. In turn, export growth accelerated in January and February. That said, the pick-up in overall activity might be short-lived as key indicators began to flag in March largely due to weaker dynamics in major European economies. Business sentiment nose-dived in March, as did exports, pointing to hiccups in manufacturing at the end of Q1. Moreover, rising inflation, coupled with ebbing retail sales, suggest consumption might have eased somewhat throughout the quarter. In politics, on 30 March, Zuzana Caputova won the presidential race on an independent platform amid increasing disaffection with Smer, Slovakia’s ruling party.
