Portugal - Current Account (billions of Euros)

Available data points to a relatively tepid pace of expansion in Q1. Industrial output contracted more sharply in January–February compared to Q4 2018 amid ebbing global momentum, while the current account deficit widened compared to the same period last year. And while retail sales growth, on average, picked up in the first two months, confidence among consumers fell sharply throughout Q1 over rising fears on the economy’s prospects in the year ahead. A surge in imports in January–February, mainly of capital goods, however, suggests that domestic demand remained somewhat resilient. Meanwhile, the country grappled with energy shortages at the outset of Q2, as fuel-tanker drivers began a three-day nationwide strike on 15 April over low wages and poor working conditions. The strike disrupted wider economic activity as some factories halted production, bus routes were suspended, and flights cancelled—spilling over into losses for the vital tourism sector.
