Current Account in Myanmar
Myanmar - Current Account (billions of U.S. Dollars)Economic growth moderated noticeably last year, likely on the back of softening domestic demand and flooding in mid-2018 which smothered agricultural output. Weaker income growth seems to have capped private consumption growth amid strong inflationary pressures; inflation jumped in part due to higher oil prices and the depreciation of the kyat, following the Central Bank’s decision to remove the trading band for the currency. Furthermore, investment growth slowed during April–September. Turning to this year, available data shows that the manufacturing sector remained in good health through March. Operating conditions improved thanks to stronger growth in output, new orders and employment; the latter grew at the quickest rate in a year.
