Fiscal Balance in Mongolia
Mongolia - Fiscal BalanceEconomic activity likely continued to be supported by the crucial mining sector in the third quarter, after registering a strong performance in H1 on the back of an investment surge related to the expansion of the Oyu Tolgoi mine. However, the fall in copper prices observed since June—mostly due to a slowdown in China and increasing trade tensions with the U.S.—is likely to have dampened the otherwise strong momentum of the external sector. Although copper prices are expected to recover by year-end, they should be offset by a likely fall in thermal coal prices, Mongolia’s second biggest export commodity.
