Malta - GDP

Recent data suggests the economy continued to grow at a healthy pace in Q1 and at the beginning of Q2, after shifting into a lower gear at the end of last year on weaker domestic demand. Buoyant retail sales figures indicate consumer spending was robust in Q1, underpinned by a steady decline in unemployment and an almost 20% jump in tourist arrivals. On the other hand, industrial production contracted significantly in the quarter, likely weighed down by falling merchandise exports. Heading into Q2, in April both business conditions and consumer sentiment remained broadly positive, although they weakened somewhat, and the unemployment rate fell to a new record low.
