Unemployment in Luxembourg
Luxembourg - UnemploymentAvailable data suggests the subdued performance seen in Q4 2017 persisted early this year. A weak external sector, reflected by a wider trade deficit in January–February compared to the same period last year, likely dragged on growth in Q1. Furthermore, despite the unemployment rate falling to an over six-year low in Q1, tepid retail sales growth and deteriorating consumer confidence suggest household spending remained soft. On a more positive note, on the fiscal front, even though central government expenditures exceeded revenues in Q1, the deficit was lower compared to the same period last year. In addition, tax revenues surpassed budgeted estimates and public investment soared in Q1, boding well for growth going forward.
