GDP in Laos
Laos - GDPEconomic growth is likely strong in the second half of the year, thanks to robust hydropower generation and healthy growth in the manufacturing and services sectors. However, concerns over growing macroeconomic imbalances are bringing the benefits of infrastructure projects under China’s Belt and Road initiative into question. Particularly, the USD 6 billion China-Laos railway—for which Laos is responsible for 30% of the financing—is putting strain on the government’s coffers and public debt is expected to grow notably in 2018. In addition, the current account deficit will likely widen in 2018, driven by imports related to the infrastructure projects.
