Inflation in Jordan
Jordan - InflationThe economy expanded at a broadly steady pace last year, underpinned by the re-opening of border crossings with Iraq and Syria, and stronger tourism activity. Turning to this year, in March, the government authorized the reinstatement of the Jordan-Syria free trade area and announced that work is proceeding on establishing a Jordan-Iraq industrial zone; both developments should aid Jordan’s flagging industrial sector, which shrank in annual terms for the 14th consecutive month in January. On the political front, MPs demanded in March that the state-run National Electric Power Company cancels a 15-year deal to supply natural gas from Israel even though it is expected to save the cash-strapped government a total of USD 1 billion.
