Jamaica - Interest RateData confirmed that economic growth accelerated in Q2 thanks to double-digit expansions in the agriculture, and mining and quarrying sectors. Favorable weather conditions and government aid supported agriculture while the resumption of operations at the Alpart refinery boosted the mining sector. In addition, the government posted a fiscal surplus in Q2, outperforming the target for a balanced budget. Looking at Q3, tourist arrivals expanded robustly in July-August but the merchandise trade deficit widened substantially through July. In September, the IMF concluded the fourth review of the standby arrangement and praised the government’s reform progress. Approval by the Executive Board in November would unlock around USD 226 million in funding.
