Current Account in Jamaica
Jamaica - Current AccountEconomic momentum is likely to have been relatively stable in the first quarter of the year. A rebound in tourist arrivals, following two consecutive quarters of contractions, should have driven growth in the quarter despite March’s weak showing. However, the external sector’s drag on the economy likely worsened as the merchandise trade deficit widened on strong import growth outpacing export growth. Going forward, a spike in violent crime in western Jamaica threatens to dampen tourist activity, where a state of emergency was declared in late April. More positively, fixed investment should pick up from late June onwards, thanks to several large-scale construction projects and tourism investment.
