Imports in Haiti
Haiti - ImportsPolitical instability and unrest continued to weigh on the economy in the first quarter of 2019, amid the ongoing PetroCaribe embezzlement scandal. Although the Parliament voted to dismiss PM Jean-Henry Céant and his government on 21 March, new protests erupted on 29 March demanding the resignation of President Jovenel Moise. The unrest appears to have rocked the tourism sector and contributed to the gourde’s further slide against the U.S. dollar in recent weeks. The resulting instability has already stalled the construction of a Taiwanese-funded electricity grid project and will likely continue to weigh on the construction sector going forward.
