Haiti - Benchmark Rate

The economy stalled in the first quarter of this fiscal year, which ran from October to December 2018, only supported by growth in the service sector. Meanwhile, both industrial and agricultural output fell in the quarter, while employment data for the same period shows large year-on-year job losses in NGOs and public administration. Turning to 2019, the economy has likely remained in the doldrums thus far amid elevated unrest, political instability, high inflation, and travel advisories hampering tourism. Moreover, ongoing fuel and electricity shortages—after the country failed to pay its international suppliers—pose a grave threat to economic prospects as Haiti possesses limited power generation capacity.
