Georgia - Interest Rate

Annual growth edged up to 4.7% in Q1 2019, from 4.5% in Q4 2018, according to preliminary results. The external sector seemingly spearheaded the acceleration, chiefly thanks to Russia’s increased appetite for Georgian commodity exports. In the same quarter, imports contracted, leading the trade deficit to fall but also likely signaling softening consumer demand at home. This came as inflation more than doubled in the first quarter, which will have eaten into real income growth and consumer spending growth. Meanwhile, S&P Global Ratings upgraded the outlook on Georgia's BB credit rating from stable to positive, citing the country’s resilience to external shocks and its continued compliance with IMF conditions under the current program.
