Public Debt in Botswana
Botswana - Public DebtEconomic activity likely remained upbeat in Q3, following strong growth in Q2 that was propelled by buoyant fixed investment. Bank lending to households remained solid in July and August which, coupled with subdued inflation, likely supported purchasing power and thus spending activity in the quarter. Meanwhile, diamond exports—which make up about 90% of total exported goods—bounced back in Q3 after declining year-on-year in Q2, largely reflecting higher prices for the precious stone. This again bodes well for the country’s external position, following recently-released data which showed that a hefty current account surplus was recorded in Q2 despite weak exports of the all-important mineral.
