Botswana - Exchange Rate

Recently-released GDP data revealed the economy shifted into a higher gear in Q2, with annual growth accelerating to 5.3% from 4.8% in Q1. The pick-up was underpinned by stronger domestic demand, which saw capital spending grow at the fastest pace in nearly three years on the back of increased investment in machinery and equipment. Meanwhile, another disappointing export performance subtracted from growth. Given diamonds account for the bulk of overseas shipments and mineral taxes are a major source of government revenue, public finances also took a hit in Q2, with the fiscal deficit widening substantially year-on-year. Available data for Q3, however, shows that diamond exports recovered in July–August, boding well for overall economic activity in the quarter.
