Trade Balance in Belgium

Belgium - Trade Balance

Fourth-quarter growth last year was sluggish but stable from a quarter earlier, landing just short of analysts’ expectations. Ahead of comprehensive national accounts, last year’s moderate second half appeared to fall in line with the broader slowdown across the Eurozone. Export growth screeched to a standstill in December amid turmoil in Germany and France, which exacerbated already-fraught regional trade. Domestic demand looks to have offset any external-sector woes, however, given buoyant retail sales growth and record-low unemployment. Deteriorating economic sentiment into February bodes poorly for the current quarter, although upbeat private-sector lending is expected to keep fixed investment afloat. In politics, a caretaker government has left existing economic policy intact ahead of federal elections in May.
