Consumption in Bahrain

Bahrain - Consumption

Data from Q1 appears largely positive, after higher mining output powered Q4 2018’s acceleration. The non-oil sector benefited from a surge in exports and solid private sector credit growth, which, coupled with tepid inflationary pressures, likely stoked private spending. Moreover, oil production likely increased in annual terms in Q1. Looking at the first month of Q2, private sector credit growth stayed elevated, while non-oil merchandise exports continued to soar year-on-year. Meanwhile, the government announced in May that it will receive USD 2.3 billion of aid this year from GCC allies as part of the financial package agreed in 2018. The announcement followed Parliament’s approval of the 2019 budget, which aims to cut the fiscal deficit and rekindle investor confidence.
