Armenia - GDP

A massive political shake-up has taken place after weeks of mass demonstrations against corruption and cronyism forced former leader Serzh Sargsyan to resign. On 21 May, a new government was sworn in led by opposition and protest leader Nikol Pashinyan as prime minister and with former deputy finance minister Atom Janjughazyan as minister of finance. The new government has stated that its primary task will be to fast track elections, and it is unlikely that large policy changes could be implemented before a new vote given that the ousted Republican party holds the majority of seats. Economic activity has been buoyant, with the economy increasing a strong 9.6% annually in the first quarter of the year, supported by booming growth in the mining sector.
