Consumption in Algeria
Algeria - ConsumptionGrowth so far this year has likely been driven by the hydrocarbon sector—thanks to rising oil prices and new projects from state-owned firm Sonatrach—and by the use of money creation to fuel government spending. Economic growth in Q1 accelerated thanks to oil sector activity and despite a slowdown in the non-oil economy. Meanwhile, high fiscal spending buttressed job creation in the construction and administrative sectors, leading unemployment to fall noticeably as of April. The momentum likely continued in Q2 and into H2 2018, amid renewed efforts by Sonatrach to strike a deal with major oil firms and ahead of the start of operations in the Touat gas field in H2.
