DR Congo Economic Outlook
May 22, 2018Strong global demand for key export commodities and elevated energy and base metal prices appear to be sustaining the mild economic recovery that has been underway since last year. Despite upbeat copper and cobalt output metrics and a recent rise in business sentiment, the economy continues to be held back by crippling political uncertainty and recent fears over the direction of the mining sector. Joseph Kabila, the longtime president who has held on to power beyond his mandate, has announced elections for the end of the year and concerns are mounting as to whether he will run again—which he is constitutionally barred from doing—or anoint a successor.
DR Congo Economic GrowthA booming global economy should bolster the external sector and buoy growth this year. That said, significant political risk ahead of this year’s elections is weighing on the fragile economy and new royalty laws have threatened to disrupt mining output. Moreover, rampant inflation continues hammering consumers. Met the why particular analysts expect growth of 3.3% in 2018, unchanged from last month’s forecast, and 3.7% in 2019.
